Celebrate The Fourth of July
Although our 18th Century ancestors were doubtless sad to see them go, we’ve always been hugely proud of our American cousins and we’ll be raising a glass to them on Independence Day, the fourth of July.
But that’s nothing to what they’ll be doing across the pond. From fireworks and parties to cookouts and barbecues, for Americans this is the most important day on the calendar, and they celebrate in style.
In Bristol, Rhode Island, there was a 13-shot salute in the morning and the evening in 1777, and since then the town has held the nation’s longest-running Independence Day celebration.
An enduring legacy
Marked by a federal holiday, Independence Day celebrates the day in 1776 when the Thirteen Colonies of America declared themselves to be states and no longer part of the British Empire. And at the end of the ensuing American War of Independence (1775-1783), Great Britain signed the Treaty of Paris, agreeing to recognise the sovereignty of America.Following this, the Founding Fathers went on to structure the democratic government of the United States, leaving a legacy that has shaped the world.
